Dupion or Dupioni is a pure silk fabric made out of raw silk fiber. It is silk at its best natural form. The default inherent random slubs distinguish it from other lesser quality silks. Available in a myriad range of colors, Dupion is considered the best in silk for curtains, upholstery and dresses.
Caterpillars create silk by secreting two rows of liquid from the top of their heads. When it touches the air, the liquid becomes solid and the caterpillars wrap themselves up in this substance forming a cocoon. Two caterpillars in the same pod wrapping their yarns around each other yield a double strand which gives a thick and thin appearance. This textured fabric is known as Dupion silk.
Dupion silk has an irregular weave with tiny nubs showing. It is sometimes confused with 'shantung' or 'raw silk' which is usually lighter in weight and has a finer weave than Dupion. Dupion is used extensively by many of the top bridal designers and manufacturers.
Dupioni is most often used for loose fitting blouses, jackets, suits, skirts, dresses, bridal gowns and draperies for home decoration. White dupioni often used for bridal gowns due to its lustrous sheen and relatively low cost. That is a good choice, as we often have matching beaded dupioni in the same shades, perfect for a contrasting bodice. Avoid tight fitting garments as seams may pull apart due to the weave. Sews relatively easily, but pins leave marks, so pin carefully.
