Silk organza is a crisp, sheer, lightweight plain weave fabric which also may be made of rayon, nylon, or polyester. In silk, the stiffness comes from the natural gum that remains on the fibers after processing. In man-made fibers, the stiffness is engineered. In bridal gowns with an overskirt, silk organza is a beautiful choice, having just enough body to stand out yet still move nicely. In bridal gowns that have large puffy sleeves, an interlining of silk organza will hold the shape without adding bulk. It is also used as an interfacing where sheerness is a factor. Silk organza pinafores and Peter Pan collars are traditional for little girls.
Silk organza fabric is just one of the fabrics we carry that are classic choices for blouses and dresses. Our site also offers silk georgette, silk chiffon, silk charmeuse, silk crepe and peau de soie fabric. The common denominator among these fabrics is that, like silk organza, they have a long history as generic silks but have been very successfully imitated in polyester. For reasons of both cost and ease of care, polyester has taken over from silk for both bridal gowns and prom dresses. However, designers still much prefer silk and where cost and practical concerns is not at issue, silk is still the fabric of choice.
